Chapter Nine

Natalie sat in her home office on Thursday afternoon, staring at the clock on her computer screen. The time was 12:58 p.m. Butterflies fluttered in her abdomen. In two minutes, she’d have the most important phone call of her professional career—the scheduled video conference with the owners of Forever Love.

She took a sip of water from the bottle on her desk to ease the dry-as-cotton sensation in her mouth.

Deep breaths. You’ve got this.

Lingering doubts had plagued her, keeping her awake past midnight as she analyzed the pros and cons of her decision. What if she said yes and Daddy became gravely ill? Would she have to turn around and move back to Meadow Springs? Or would her financial support be enough? If she said no to Forever Love, would a better opportunity come along later?

Shay’s green eyes intruded on her thoughts. She frowned. Not quite the opportunity she had in mind. The familiar chime of an incoming call sent her heart into her throat.

She clicked on the green icon to accept the call and willed her lips to form a convincing smile that masked her uncertainty. “Good morning. This is Natalie.”

A woman in her midfifties, with a sleek, auburn bob and a flawless porcelain complexion, appeared on Natalie’s computer screen. “Hi, Natalie. I’m Penny Winslow, Karen’s partner at Forever Love.” Penny smiled, revealing perfectly aligned teeth. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“It’s nice to meet you, too.” Natalie sat up straighter, wishing she’d chosen bolder accessories or a more sophisticated outfit, instead of her understated black blazer over a simple black sheath. “I’ve always enjoyed weddings I’ve attended at Forever Love’s venues.”

“I’m glad to hear that. If all goes according to plan, we hope you’ll be coordinating events at those venues very soon.” Penny’s confident declaration sent another jolt of adrenaline through Natalie’s body. Had they already assumed she’d say yes?

“Thank you for speaking with me today,” Penny said. “Unfortunately Karen can’t join us. She’s managing a crisis regarding one of Saturday’s weddings.”

“I understand.” Natalie adjusted the desk chair to get a better angle with her computer’s camera. “I’m flattered you and Karen are interested in acquiring Magnolia Lane.”

“Are you kidding? Karen can’t stop talking about that barn. And your portfolio is stunning. Rustic yet elegant—the ideal asset in a wedding venue these days.”

Yes! Natalie folded her hands in her lap to resist pumping the air with her fist. “Thank you. My family and I worked very hard to restore the livery to its current condition.”

“It’s beautiful.” Penny touched the strand of pearls dangling around her neck. “Just to clarify, your family is on board with the sale of Magnolia Lane to an outside firm?”

Natalie’s stomach clenched. Haven’t exactly mentioned it yet. She willed her polite smile not to waver while she formulated a coherent response. “I own the barn and the two-acre plot. It was given to me by my grandparents.”

“Oh, good. That makes the logistics of the barn becoming one of our venues simpler.” Papers rustled, and Penny glanced down.
